张瞄在他的水墨实践中表现了他对现代都市人那种飘浮不定，失落以及疏离的生存状态，他并没有陷入对生活情节进行细节性的描写，而是注重于人物内心情感的表现。他画中人物总是带有一种怀疑，眇视，飘忽以及茫然的表情，与其说张瞄选择介入生活的方式来表达对社会现实的关注，还不如说，“现实”对于张瞄来说只是一种移情的“借体”而已，他把现实形象放进了自己所营造的虚幻空间之中，从中传达的是自己对客观世界的讽喻和批判。他近期作品更喜欢把对象放在夜空之中，用他自己的话说，夜幕中发生的事情更逼近真实，其实，这是他心灵的真实。而我认为，这种来自于内心的“真实”使艺术创造更具永恒的魅力。
在目前全球一体化的趋势和语境影响下，在当今观念艺术纷纷扰扰的潮流中，张瞄并没有把自己置身事外，但他也保持了对当代艺术中流行符号和图式的警惕性，他并没有把当代精神表现为形式上的游戏，而是更注重于精神本质的思考。因此，我们从他的水墨作品中并没有看到传统笔墨与当代艺术图式的生硬拼凑，而是让水墨语言与当代精神内涵有机契合。值得注意的是，相对于当今一些“新文人”水墨作品中的“文人气”和“市井气”，张瞄的作品更多的贴近于“都市气息”以及表现主义精神。

Heputsimagesofrealityintohisillusoryspace,whichconveyshissatireandcriticismtotheobjectiveworld.ZhangMiaoalsoperceivesanessentialdarknessinherentinmodernurbanlife,inhisrecentlyworksmorelikeobjectsinthedarknightsky,inhisownwords,whathappensatnightisclosertoreallife.Infact,itisatruereflectionofhisheart.Inmyopinion,whenitcomesfromtheheart,thiskindof"reality"alwaysmakesartcreationamoretimelesscharm.
Theglobalreachandinfluenceofwesterncommerceandlanguagehasgeneratedchaosintoday'sconceptualartinChina.ZhangMiaodoesnotignoretheseinfluences,ZhangMiaostandsapartfrommanycontemporariesbyhavingfullyembracedthenewtrends,whilestillpayinghomagetotraditionalstyles.Hedoesnottakethecontemporaryspiritmerelyasaformofthegame,butalsoasafocusonthedeeperspiritualnature.InZhangMiao'sworkswedonotseetraditionalpaintingstylesandcontemporaryartformsstifflypiecedtogether;insteadweseethetimelessmediumofChineseinkpaintingseamlesslyandbrilliantlycombinedwithcontemporarytrends.Unlikesomeoftoday's"NewLiterati"andChinesepaintingsinthe"LiteratiTemperament"and"TemporalCharacter"style,ZhangMiao'sworksbringtolifeauniversallyappealingexpressionistandurbanspirit.
