RobertO’ConnorwasborninCork,Irelandin1976andcompletedhisMFAattheUniversityofUlster,Belfastin2001.FutureProjectscontinueshisexplorationofpost-industriallandscapesusingphotography.ThisnewbodyofworkisbasedaroundaseriesofimagestakeninShanghaiandHangzhouduringthespringof2006.Itdocumentsthetwocities’monumentalurbantransformation,withitstotaldisregardforthepastinitsabsolutepursuitoftheindustrialdream.Thesubjectmatterfocusesonthebillboardadvertisingofagovernmentledrealestatecampaign.O’Connorbrilliantlycapturesthespiritof“developmentfever”inthispostmodernlandscapebypickingeverydaystreetscenesbutaskingustolookattheminadifferentway.Hiscontinuingexperimentationwithlight,specificallyatdusk,imbueshisworkwithauniquelysurrealqualitywhichisasmuchdisturbingasitisbeautiful.Washedinabrightartificiallighttheimageshaveaneerieemptinesswhichleavesthempregnantwithnarrativepossibility.Butitistheartist’splayonspacewhichtakesthisnewworktoanotherlevel.Avisualgamedevelopsintheplayonambiguitybetweenwhatisrealandnotreal.Glossycityscapesdepictedonthebillboardsandtheactuallandscapestheyinhabit,wheredoesoneendandtheotherstart?AmIlookingatanimageortherealthing?Thiscreatesatensionwithinthephotographswhichforcestheviewer’sabsoluteengagementanddoesnotfailtodisappoint.
