据悉:“新作·王冬龄”作品展将于纽约时间9月12日在纽约前波画廊开幕,展览将持续至10月24日

ChambersFineArtispleasedtoannouncetheopeningonSeptember12,2015ofWangDongling:NewWorks.WangDongling(b.1945inRudong,JiangsuProvince)iscurrentlyDirectoroftheModernCalligraphyStudyCenterattheNationalAcademyofFineArts,Hangzhou,ChinaandisoneofChina’sforemostlivingcalligraphers.CalligraphyisoneoftheoldestlivingarttraditionsintheworldandWanghasbeenintimatelyassociatedwithitsinceearlyinhiscareer,studyingwiththemasterLinSanzhi(1898-1989).ItwasfromtheclassicaltraininghereceivedunderLinthatheacquiredtheconfidencetoexperimentwithwaysinwhichthecalligraphicstrokemightbeliberatedfromthesimultaneousconveyanceofmeaning.

ThistendencybecameevenmorepronouncedduringthethreeyearshespentasavisitingprofessorattheUniversityofMinnesotaandtheUniversityofCalifornia,SantaCruzbetween1989and1991whenhewasfirstexposedtocontemporaryWesternpainting.AlthoughneverdirectlyinfluencedbyWesternabstraction,WangwascertainlyaffectedbythescaleofmuchofwhathesawandthewillingnessbyAmericanandEuropeanartistsofthe1950sand1960stotakerisks,nevermorepronouncedthaninthebreak-throughworksoftheAbstractExpressionists.Asanacknowledgedmasterofthisancientmeansofexpression,Wangiscapableofworkinginstylesthatencapsulatethehistoryofcalligraphyrangingoverthousandsofyears,fromthetraditionaltranscriptionsincursivescriptofclassicaltextstoanentirelyabstractmode.DuringtherecentexhibitionInkArt:PastasPresentinContemporaryChinaattheMetropolitanMuseumofArt,NewYorkin2013-14,Wanggaveapublicdemonstrationofhismostflamboyantmeansofexpression.Dippinghismassivebrushesintovatsofink,heconcentratedforamomentbeforesteppingontolargesheetsofpaperspreadonthefloor,steppingnimblyintothecrucialemptyspacesbetweenhispowerfulbrushstrokes.

Inthenewbodyofworksdatingfrom2015inthepresentexhibition,Wanghasachievedanewleveloffreedomofexpression.AlthoughtheyrefertopoemsandtextsfromtheTangandSongdynasties,sometimesjustfocusingonseveralcharacters,themeaningresidesintheunmistakablecharacterofWang’scalligraphy.Whethernearlyfillingthesheetofpaperorcanvaswithdenseaccumulationsofbrushstrokesorlessdenselyappliedskeinsofstrokesofvaryingdegreesofintensity,Wang’scalligraphiesareimmediatelyrecognizable.Inadiscussionofthisformofcalligraphy,criticGaoShiminghasobservedthat“writingbecomespuretrace.Thusthecorporalityandthegestureofwritingbecomestheessence.”

Contrastingwiththetraditionalmediumoftheworksininkonpaperandcanvaswillbeanewseriesofworksinacryliconpolyvinyl,inwhichthetransparentnatureofthegroundcreatesanewspatialdimensionfortheartist’scalligraphy.TheskitteringtracesofWang’scalligraphyexistnotinthefictivespaceofhisworksonpaperbutintheenvironmentinwhichthespectatorviewsthemandareconsequentlyaffectedbychangesinlightandotherchanceoccurrences.TheartistwillgiveademonstrationofhiscalligraphyinacryliconpolyvinylattheopeningreceptionSeptember12th.
